Expectant and new Moms from underserved communities in the United States face disproportionately high rates of maternal mortality, postpartum complications, and infant loss—largely due to systemic inequities, implicit bias in healthcare, and limited access to culturally competent support. In Jacksonville and similar communities, the need for trusted, accessible, and affirming maternal health education is urgent. Many expectant and new mothers lack consistent guidance on topics such as mental health, nutrition, breastfeeding, and stress management—leading to preventable health complications for both mother and child. In faith-based and community-rooted settings, there is a unique opportunity to close this gap through relevant, relationship-centered programming that educates, affirms, and empowers. The Health Literacy Program for Expectant Mothers and Moms of Newborns at Saint James AME Church seeks to address this need by providing structured, high-impact education that centers wellness, reduces isolation, and connects women to medical professionals and community resources in a safe, supportive environment.
